On the Brink of Revolution

By the spring of 1775 you needed a saw to cut the tension that gripped all thirteen American colonies. As the rift between New World Englishmen and Old World Englishmen widened into a yawning chasm, the former became more comfortable thinking of themselves as independent Americans while the latter were becoming increasingly uncomfortable with that reality and more determined than ever to ensure it would never happen.
In the wake of the Boston Tea Party in 1773 the British Crown pretty much embargoed Massachusetts from her sister colonies in an effort to contain a political virus that had the potential to become an epidemic. But it was too late: all the other colonies were infected and the virus was spreading too rapidly for containment.
All throughout 1774 the colonies formed militias and began arming up, stockpiling weapons and ammunition in anticipation of what many had come to believe would be an armed confrontation. When - not if - that moment came, it was their intention to be prepared to defend their lives, their property and, most importantly, their liberty.
That moment came in April of 1775 when the British decided the time had come to disarm the population. Their first target was a weapons cache near Lexington and Concord in Massachusetts.
About 700 British Army regulars, under Lieutenant Colonel Francis Smith, were given secret orders to capture and destroy military supplies that were reportedly stored by the Massachusetts militia at Concord. Through effective intelligence gathering, Patriot colonials had received word weeks before the expedition that their supplies might be at risk, and had moved most of them to other locations. They also received details about British plans on the night before the battle, and were able to rapidly notify the area militias of the military movement.
As dawn broke on April 19, 1775 the minutemen of Lexington formed their ranks and awaited the approach of the British forces. I have no doubt the Americans fired first and that first shot truly was heard around the world.
Fast forward 234 years and the same kind of tension now grips the nation - a nation clearly divided, though not exactly in half. Even in the wake of the New Deal, the Great Society and almost two generations of liberal domination of our schools, media and, lately, our federal government, the United States is to the right of center on the political spectrum and a sizable plurality - if not an outright majority - of its citizens consider themselves to be conservative.
So why is this nation now gripped in what appears to be the crushing jaws of liberalism?
There are several answers, all of which have interleaved to create the perfect political storm that struck in the 2006 mid-term election, resulting in a Democrat majority in Congress and then continued to rage until the 2008 general election, which gave the nation a far-left radical Democrat President.
Ignorance and apathy certainly played a part. It is the natural inclination of normal people to go about their own business and, in time, to cease the eternal vigilance required to maintain liberty.
Failure to adhere to the core political principles upon which our republic was founded likewise played a part in creating the storm. Whether people wish to accept it or not, individual liberty and the right to personal property and prosperity free of undue government hindrance are the heart of our struggle for independence and once formed the core of the Republican Party platform. By abandoning those principles, the Republican Party failed to hold onto its conservative base and likewise failed to inspire others with a solid message of liberty and prosperity, which leads us to the third cause of the storm: middle of the road “independents.”
So-called independents do not cleave to any fixed political ideology but tend to lean in the direction of the prevailing political winds. In the last two elections those winds blew against the Republicans who, absent a solid ideological core, were unable to stand firm against them. As a result, the nation is presently saddled with a federal government dominated by liberal statists who are determined to transform a free market republic into a socialist oligarchy.
The problem for them is that their fevered efforts to accomplish this transmutation have caused a profound shift in the prevailing political wind: it now blows from the direction of liberty and conservatism.
Unfortunately for the statists, what they regard as nothing more than an evening breeze is a gale force blast.
Thus the context for a statement made by Sen. Jim Inhofe (R-OK) at a recent town hall meeting > http://www.chickashanews.com/local/local_story_239102559.html/
Inhofe took the opportunity to blame democrats for a bevy of issues. He lashed out at democrats for overtaking the government and spending billions of dollars on unpopular packages. He said government is becoming too big and overreaching its boundaries.
“People are not buying these concepts that are completely foreign to America,” Inhofe said. “We’re almost reaching a revolution in this country.”
Many in the meeting agreed and were vocal about their disdain for the current climate in Washington.
“No more compromise,” Chickasha resident Ed Hicks said. “We’re losing our country.”
Indeed. What started out in April as simultaneous gatherings of thousands of patriots across the country has now grown into a movement comprised of millions - all of them deeply concerned over the direction in which Obama and the Democrats are taking this country and these latter day patriots are completely unafraid to stand up to their Senators and Representatives.
The Democrats and the President either cannot or will not accept that a majority of this nation is mobilizing in opposition to their agenda. A majority of this nation rejects socialism and statism. A majority of this nation does not want government-run health care.
Obama and the Democrats cannot or will not understand that as they tighten their grip on power, more people will ultimately slip through their fingers. They cannot or will not understand that this nation is on the brink of revolution.
It’s 1774 all over again. Let us hope and pray we don’t wake up at dawn on April 19, 1775.
